About this course
Many Occupational Therapists (OTs) working outside community equipment or housing services have had limited opportunity to develop practical skills in assessing for equipment and minor home adaptations. Yet increasing pressures across health and social care mean practitioners are often expected to take a more holistic view of a person’s daily living needs. Being able to recognise functional difficulties, identify practical solutions and safely recommend appropriate equipment is therefore becoming an essential part of modern occupational therapy practice.
This one-day, face-to-face refresher course has been designed to build confidence and practical capability in this area. Delivered by experienced OTs who regularly assess for equipment and adaptations in real-world settings, the course combines clear theoretical foundations with practical, hands-on learning. Participants have the opportunity to handle and explore a wide range of commonly prescribed equipment and adaptations while working through realistic scenarios that mirror the challenges faced in practice.
Throughout the day, participants revisit core principles of functional assessment and consider how physical health conditions can impact a person’s ability to carry out everyday activities safely and independently. Using a structured model to guide assessment and clinical reasoning, the course explores how OTs can evaluate risk, identify appropriate solutions and understand the limitations of different interventions. The emphasis is on safe, defensible decision-making that supports independence while recognising environmental, functional and safety considerations.
Practical sessions introduce a variety of equipment and minor adaptations frequently encountered in home environments. Participants gain hands-on experience with measurement, positioning and fitting considerations, helping them develop confidence in selecting and recommending the most appropriate solutions for different needs.
By the end of the day, participants leave with greater confidence in identifying functional problems linked to physical health conditions and translating assessment findings into safe, practical recommendations. They will have strengthened their ability to prescribe and measure for equipment and minor adaptations, developed a clearer understanding of potential risks and limitations, and expanded their knowledge of the range of solutions that can enable people to remain independent at home.
TACT’s Equipment Refresher for OTs is particularly valuable for newly qualified OTs, practitioners who have recently moved roles, and those working in areas such as mental health, paediatrics or other specialisms where equipment assessment may not be a routine part of practice. It provides a supportive environment to refresh knowledge, build practical skills and develop confidence in recommending equipment and home adaptations for independent living.
Training can be delivered either through our scheduled open courses for individual bookings or commissioned directly for teams or services wishing to train groups of OTs together. The course’s solutions-focused approach ensures participants leave with practical skills they can apply immediately within their own practice settings.
