With the vision that there are a range of roles able to improve access to home adaptations for older and disabled people, the Trusted Advisor qualification was designed to upskill information and advice roles. Accredited at level two, learners are taught about a range of health conditions and common types of equipment that can help, how health and social care is organised and communications techniques so that they are able to advise on home adaptations.

Across Wales there are a range of teams providing housing and adaptations advice to the public including local health and social care and housing teams, voluntary organisations, social prescribers, care, and housing providers. Trusted Advisors can direct people to local pathways and advise on the types of adaptations that are available for common conditions, thereby reducing waiting times and speeding up access to much-needed equipment and adaptations for the home.

On June 9th & 10th 2025 at their HQ in Cardiff, Care & Repair Cymru will host two one-day courses that aim to grow the pool of Trusted Advisors in Wales.  A range of organisations will be invited to try out the course and see how it improves their ability to help and advise people about adaptations for the home. Learners will attend a full one-day course and complete a homework assignment led by TACT’s Occupational Therapist Trainers. TACT (Trusted Assessing and Care Training) is an accredited provider of the course specialising in training and support programmes to do with adapting the home.

FAQs

Q What are the learning outcomes and who is this designed for?
Trusted Advisor: Triaging and Advising on Independent Living is a one-day course. For learning outcomes, please see https://tact.18a.co/trusted-assessor-triaging-and-advising-on-independent-living/

Q How does this relate to Trusted Assessor programmes?
A Trusted Assessors are trained to assess and prescribe equipment and home adaptations, to handle simple cases and know when to refer to an OT.  Advisors typically are remote from the person and provide general advice about types of equipment and adaptations and how to access them. Learners on this course can progress to a Trusted Assessor qualification.

Q I work in an advice hub / call centre / voluntary service will this be suitable?
A Previous learners have come from these types of settings and found it helps them handle enquiries and be more confident about talking about practical solutions for the home.
